What is on the WorkKeys Assessment Test?

There are eight WorkKeys assessments you can take, but only three are required for you to earn an NCRC certification: Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents.

Let’s take a closer look at these three assessments.


APPLIED MATH
34 questions | 55 minutes

The questions in the Applied Math assessment are grouped into five levels of difficulty, with each level building on the skills assessed in the previous level(s).

These questions are designed to assess the following:

  • Critical thinking
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Problem-solving techniques for practical situations

GRAPHIC LITERACY
38 questions | 55 minutes

The questions in the Graphic Literacy assessment are grouped into five levels of difficulty, with each level building on the skills assessed in the previous level(s).

These questions are designed to assess the following:

  • Interpretation of graphs and charts
  • Understanding information within graphic sources
  • Analyzing and applying information from visuals
  • Critical thinking based on graphic data

WORKPLACE DOCUMENTS
35 questions | 55 minutes

The questions in the Workplace Documents assessment are grouped into five levels of difficulty, with each level building on the skills assessed in the previous level(s).

These questions are designed to assess the following:

  • Comprehension of work-related texts
  • Application of written information to job tasks
  • Understanding memos, manuals, and directions
  • Evaluating and synthesizing information from multiple documents

The rest of the assessments are optional, but you may want to take them if you’re in certain industries or roles.


APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
34 questions | 55 minutes

The questions in the Applied Technology assessment are grouped into four levels of difficulty, with each level building on the skills assessed in the previous level(s).

These questions are designed to assess the following:

  • Applying principles of technology in problem-solving
  • Understanding technical operations and machinery
  • Analyzing and applying technical information
  • Practical application of science and technology in workplace scenarios

BUSINESS WRITING
1 writing prompt | 30 minutes

The Business Writing assessment contains a single writing prompt, and your written response is timed at 30 minutes. Your written response will be scored under one of six skill levels:

  • Score 0: Inadequate
  • Score 1: Basic
  • Score 2: Developing
  • Score 3: Proficient
  • Score 4: Advanced
  • Score 5: Expert

These questions are designed to assess the following:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing
  • Focus on tone, clarity, structure, and grammar of written content
  • Assessment of practical writing tasks such as emails and reports
  • Evaluation of organization and development of ideas

WORKPLACE OBSERVATION
35 questions | 55 minutes

The questions in the Workplace Observation assessment are grouped into five skill levels.

These questions are designed to assess the following:

  • Measurement of skills in observing, following, and evaluating processes
  • Ability to notice and recall work-related details
  • Critical analysis of workflows for efficiency improvements
  • Application of observational insights to real-world tasks

The Fit assessment is split into two parts: ACT Interest Inventory and Work Values Inventory.

TALENT
165 questions | 35 minutes

The Talent assessment works a little differently than the others. The goal of this assessment is to evaluate your work-related behavior and attitude, so there are technically no right or wrong answers! Each “question” is a statement, and you answer each statement by determining how accurately it represents your personality. That’s all there is to it.

This assessment is designed to measure the following attributes:

  • Order
  • Carefulness
  • Savvy
  • Discipline
  • Striving
  • Goodwill
  • Influence
  • Optimism
  • Sociability
  • Cooperation
  • Creativity
  • Stability

How to Register

To get started with the registration process, you’ll need to find the nearest test center that administers the WorkKeys assessments you want to take. You can contact them to register for the test and pick a specific testing date.

WorkKeys Scores

Once you’ve taken the assessments, the hard part is over!

When you get your score report, you’ll notice there are two types of scores: Level Scores and Scale Scores.

Level Scores

Level Scores are related to the difficulty levels achieved in various test sections, usually ranging from 3 to 7. These are the scores that are used to determine your eligibility for the NCRC certificate.

Scale Scores

Scale Scores are used to track progress over time, ranging from 65 to 90. This helps evaluate your educational progression and provides a measure of you your abilities relate to the demands of specific jobs.

Retaking the Assessments

If you didn’t get the score you wanted on the first try, that’s okay! You can retake any of the assessments as many times as you’d like.

Take note that there’s a 30-day waiting period between testing attempts.
