How is the Test Scored?

Here’s how the scoring works for the Nelson-Denny Reading test.

Your raw score, which is the total number of questions you answer correctly, is converted into a grade level score. This score shows how your reading skills compare to the typical expectations for students at different grade levels.

For example, if you score 9.8, it suggests your reading skills are similar to a student in the ninth grade, eight months into the school year. A score of 13.2 means your reading ability matches that of a college freshman two months into their first year.

The good news is that you can’t technically fail this test! There is no set passing score since this is a diagnostic test, so it’s up to the school to determine what they constitute as an acceptable score.
