What’s On the GRE Verbal Reasoning Test?

The Verbal Reasoning questions are grouped into two sections. Each section has a different number of questions and a different time limit:

Table outlining the number of questions and time limit for each of the two sections of the GRE Verbal Reasoning test

There are three different question types:

Text Completion

These questions are your usual fill-in-the-blank questions. You’ll be given a sentence and have to fill in the blank with the correct vocabulary word. In some cases, the sentence may have multiple blanks, and some questions may ask you to fill in blanks spread out over an entire paragraph.

Here’s an example question:

  1. Despite her outward appearance of _______, she was actually quite knowledgeable about a wide range of topics.
  1. naivete
  2. erudition
  3. sophistication
  4. ingenuity
  5. affability

The correct answer in this case is A, naivete. The sentence structure suggests a contrast between her outward appearance and her actual knowledge. “Naivete” (meaning innocence or lack of experience) creates this contrast.

Sentence Equivalence

For these questions, you’ll be given a sentence and then asked to choose two words that would logically complete the sentence. The trick here is that you have to make sure both words you choose are correct; you won’t get partial credit if only one word is correct.

Here’s an example question:

  1. The politician’s speech was filled with ______, making it difficult to discern his true intentions.
  1. candor
  2. equivocation
  3. ambiguity
  4. clarity
  5. prevarication
  6. lucidity

The correct answers in this case are B, equivocation and E, prevarication. Both “equivocation” and “prevarication” refer to the use of ambiguous language to avoid giving a direct answer, which aligns with the sentence’s meaning.

Reading Comprehension

For these questions, you’ll be given some passages to read and answer questions about. Each passage will be between 100 and 450 words.
